How to Protect High Traffic Areas on Carpet in Fountain Valley, CA; Vacuuming, Rugs, Slippers & More

Have you ever noticed there are some areas of your flooring that are just dirtier than others? This is an extremely natural occurrence. As you and your family go through your home you have traffic patterns that simply get walked on more frequently than other areas because they are the easiest way to go from one point to another. Orange County Steam Masters frequently gets asked what our customers can do to prevent staining in these higher traffic areas. Today we are going to give you some tips that are great prevention methods.

Scotchgard or Other Carpet Protector

First you should think about having a stain resistant treatment or protector added to your carpet. This will help put a type of seal over the surface of your carpet that will help prevent stains from being able to set in your carpet. If you have newer carpet it may already have a stain protectant on it. Years ago you had to add this protective treatment to your carpet but it is standard in most carpets these days.

Vacuum Often

The second tip that we have for you is to make sure that you vacuum your carpet regularly. When you vacuum your carpet, you are cleaning up any dirt and debris that is on your carpet. If you allow the dirt and debris to sit on your carpet it will sink further and further into the fibers of your carpet. Once it gets deeper into your carpet fibers the dirt and debris are harder to get out. You should vacuum a minimum of once a week but we recommend vacuuming a few times per week.

Mats & Rugs to Protect Carpet

Our third carpet stain prevention method is to use plastic mats and area rugs in high traffic areas. When you put rugs down in high traffic areas it will protect your carpet from the wear and tear from the constant foot traffic. Instead your rug will absorb the wear and tear in these high traffic areas. If the rug wears out it is much easier and cheaper to replace a rug than it is to replace your carpet.

Wear Slippers & House Shoes on Carpet

Fourth on our list is an idea that some people are opposed to. Having a no shoes in the house policy is an amazing way to prevent staining on your carpet. As you walk outside dirt and debris stick to your shoes. When you wear those shoes inside your home the dirt and debris from the sidewalks, streets, and store flooring transfer from your shoes to your carpet. Taking your shoes off prevents this from happening. Some people oppose to this concept because they feel like it is rude to ask your family and friends to remove their shoes when they come in to your home. Take some time and think about what your family wants to do about this tip.
